FRANKFURT--German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd AG (HLAG.XE) Tuesday said its full-year operating profit fell in 2016 but rose significantly in the final quarter, reflecting cost cuts in a challenging market environment. It said then 2016 operating profit will be well below 2015 because of sinking freight rates and potential merger costs. Quarterly earnings before interest and taxes rose almost sixfold to EUR100 million ($106 million) from EUR17.8 million. It has yet to announce its dividend plans for 2016, its first full year of listing. In July, Hapag-Lloyd had cut its earnings guidance, when it announced plans to merge with United Arab Shipping Co. S.A.G..


according to LONDON--U.K. home builder Taylor Wimpey PLC (TW.LN) Tuesday beat analysts expectations as it reported a 22% rise in 2016 pretax profit after selling more homes at higher prices. Revenue rose to GBP3.68 billion from GBP3.14 billion as the average price for a Taylor Wimpey home rose 11% to GBP255,000 during the year. Peel Hunt penciled in a pretax profit of GBP715 million for the year. Taylor Wimpey's pretax profit climbed to 732.9 million pounds ($883.1 million) for the 12 months ended Dec. 31, more than the GBP603.2 million it made in the year earlier period. Peel Hunt forecast a total dividend of 11 pence for the year.

Provident Financial profit up; dividend rises

In January, Provident Financial said adjusted pretax profit woulld be in line with the average market estimate of GBP333.9 million. Pretax profit for the year totaled GBP343.9 million, up 26% from GBP273.6 million. LONDON--Provident Financial PLC (PFG.LN), which provides home credit loans and credit cards to consumers with poor credit history, Tuesday reported a 26% rise in 2016 pretax profit and said it has made a good start to the new year. The company said its closely watched profit before tax and exceptional items, rose 14% to 334.1 million pounds ($415.27 million), from GBP292.9 million in the same period a year earlier. The specialist lender declared a final dividend of 91.4 pence per share, giving a total payout of 134.6 pence for the year, up from 120.1 pence paid a year earlier.
