For 2017, Burlington expects net sales to increase in the range of 7.5% to 8.5%, with comparable-store sales rising in the range of 2% to 3%. Net sales rose 9.4% to $1.69 billion. Burlington Stores Inc.'s profit climbed 27% in the latest quarter on rising sales and the company was upbeat about earnings this year, continuing to post solid results as the broader retail space remains pressured. For its first quarter which ends in April, Burlington expects adjusted earnings in a range of 67 cents to 70 cents a share, on a net sales increase of 5% to 6%. Burlington said comparable-store sales increased 4.6% and inventory fell 9%.

Comparable sales at the Abercrombie brand fell 13%, while that metric increased 1% at Hollister. But those efforts didn't succeed in attracting shoppers to Abercrombie stores during the holiday period. Fran Horowitz, who was named CEO last month, cited a competitive retail environment and admitted to missteps at the Abercrombie brand, including an unsuccessful marketing campaign. Executives also plan to apply strategies learned from the company's Hollister brand to improve Abercrombie, Ms. Horowitz said. Abercrombie & Fitch Co. posted its fourth straight quarter of declining same-store sales, as the retailer's efforts to revamp its namesake brand showed little sign of drawing back shoppers.
