When the price of natural gas sees an uptick, so do oil and gas firms and EQT Corp.'s first quarter earnings report reflects that. The Downtown-based firm reported a profit of $164 million, or 43 cents per share for the past quarter, compared with $5.6 million, or 5 cents per share during the same three months last year. EQT spent $653 million for two acquisitions last quarter. The company is fresh off an acquisition blitz during the past three months, having added nearly 100,000 Marcellus Shale acres in West Virginia during that period. EQT attributed the achievement, in part, to a rise the price it was able to get for its hydrocarbons, which, at $3.50 per thousand cubic feet, was a third higher than a year ago.
